Cyclepedia: A Century of Iconic Bicycle Design。
自序On the Fascination with Bicycles / Michael Embacher (http://www.dmh.org.il/pages/default.aspx?
"When the spirits are low,
when the day appears dark,
when work becomes monotonous,
when hope hardly seems worth having,
just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road,
without thought of anything but the ride you are taking."
——Arthur Conan Doyle, Scientific American Magazine, 1896
The friendly concept of the Buddy Bike was first thought of before 1900, and there have been several versions since. The number of the bicycle shown here is Boo3557. It was the tandem for riders who prioritized socializing over performance, with the arrangement of the seats making communication easy, and prompting a nickname – “the sociable”.
The Buddy Bike gave the left-hand passenger only the power of steering, although its format allowed riders to debate and agree on the direction of travel. The handlebars on the right were just for balance.
Most importantly, the Buddy Bike required a balanced load to avoid the bike tilting of falling sideways. This meant both passengers needed to have equal weights and should, if possible, refrain from quarreling during travel. Using the Buddy Bike solo was not an option as the offset seats made balance impossible – unless you only cycled around left-hand bends! |
